Z's 2008 NFL Week 7 REVIEW!
10/22/2008
Zsports ImageWhy can't they review referees penalty flags?
  • The undefeated Tennessee Titans (6-0) roll through K.C. Jeff Fisher has his team playing his way, from running hard (Chris Johnson 18 carries 168 yards and 1 TDs, Lendale White 17-149-3 TDs) to hitting hard, as the defense controls the field from sideline to sideline. Defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth is having as dominant a season as any DT ever; he's a force in every game.
  • The (5-1) Pittsburgh Steelers continue to flatten the competition, if you can call Cincinnati competition. Top two running backs hurt? Doesn't matter-Mewelde Moore goes for 2 TDs 120 yards on 20 carries.
  • The Buffalo Bills (5-1) behind great play from their defense, and amazing play from QB Trent Edwards stepped up and came from behind to over power the ultra-talented Chargers. This team has all the intangibles to take the division, but there are 10 more games where they will have to prove it.
  • The (4-3) Dallas Cowboys fall to the (2-4) St. Louis Rams..... (34-14). ‘Wade’ a minute...the RAMS?...Jerry's gonna be MAD (Hey Tony how’s that pinkie feeling?)
  • Aaron Rodgers and Ryan Grant lead the Packers (4-3) past Peyton and the Colts (3-3) at Lambeau Field 34-14.
  • Brett suffers from Jet lag, as the (3-3) NY Bretts fall (flat on their face) in (2-4) Oakland in overtime 16-13 on a Sebastian Janikowski 57 yard field goal in a game that took offense back about 15 years.
  • The San Francisco 49ers (2-5) FIRE coach Mike Nolan, and replace him with NFL legend, and longtime assistant head coach Mike Singletary.
  • Chicago Bears? & Minnesota Vikings? Combine for 89 points in one game?? (In a game some people said would be a good defensive game!) Who could have expected a 48-41 Bears win?
  • Already looking forward to next week: (5-1) Pittsburgh hosts (5-1) Giants in the biggest game of the year (SO FAR) & Then there is the farthest away game of the year for the (3-4) Chargers and (3-4) Saints as they will play in London! The World Series is set The Tampa Bay Rays vs. The Philadelphia Phillies. Its Fall Classic time, where legends are made.
  • The World Series is set The Tampa Bay Rays vs. The Philadelphia Phillies. Its Fall Classic time, where legends are made.
  • Awesome college football, the BCS has been taken over by old school powerhouses; Texas with star QB Colt McCoy and star coach Mack Brown, and Alabama with their star QB John Parker Wilson, and their superstar coach Nick Saban, control the top 2 spots (Texas#1 and Alabama#2)
Speaking of college football…….. YOU GOTTA SEE THIS!! (only 12 seconds long)

AFC East
Bills-(5-1) The home team Bills overcame a halftime deficit, and a very talented (3-4) Chargers team en route to a 23-14 victory. Trent Edwards was 25-30 for 261 yards and 1 touchdown, and Marshawn Lynch ran the ball 19 times for 70 yards and 1 touchdown. The Bills special teams were special as always, and the defense was as stingy as ever, even intercepting a Phillip Rivers pass (that would have tied the game) in the end zone with less than 6 minutes to play. Next up is a trip to sunny (2-4) Miami where the Fin's are overmatched, but can't be overlooked.
Patriots-(4-2) Monday night the Patriots looked like it was 2007 all over again as they ran (and passed) all over the Broncos (Denver looked a lot like the team that was embarrassed by Kansas City). Lawrence Maroney is lost for the year, but it did not matter against the Broncos as Sammy Morris had a career best 138 yds rushing. The Pats defense also returned to form, a form they had no excuse to ever desert. The unexplainable St. Louis Rams travel to Foxborough next week for the 'who's gonna show up' game of the week. (New England will show)
NY Jets-(3-3) If anyone besides a Raiders fan had to sit through that game, I'm sorry. Thomas Jones had another good game, and nobody's stats were bad, but the combined offensive output was highlighted by a 52 yard field goal from the Jets Jay Feely to tie the game and send it into overtime. Then (after 12 overtime minutes of three plays and punt, then three plays and punt, over and again!) the (2-4) Raiders Sebastian Janikowski's game winning 57 yard field goal (a new NFL record for longest overtime field goal). Next up (and not soon enough!) a visit from the hapless Chiefs, the Bretts can not afford another lost chance.
Miami-(2-4) The Dolphins were never in a game that was controlled by a swarming (3-3) Ravens defense. Miami's special teams, defense and offense all were simply inadequate. The next step seems to be a step up in competition as (5-1) Buffalo comes to town. The Dolphins are typecasting themselves into the role of spoiler with 10 regular season games left to play.

AFC North
Steelers-(5-1) No Willie Parker, no Rashard Mendenhall, no matter= Mewelde Moore went for 20 carries 120 yards and 2 touchdowns against a woeful (0-7) Cincinnati Bungles team (that was in shock from the opening kickoff). Big Ben Roethlisberger was 17-28 for 216 yds and 2 TDs. and the Steel Curtain defense is once again summoning the 70's with hard hitting in your face football. Next up the biggest test that the Steelers have faced yet as the (5-1) defending Super bowl champion Giants roll into town for an epic early season battle.
Ravens-(3-3) Joe Flacco held the reins on offense, to the tone of 17-23 for 232 yds and 1 TD and Willis McGahee toted the rock 19 times for 105 yds and 1 td. The story for these Ravens, as it has always been in Baltimore is the tenacious defense totally dominating the opponent, in this case... (2-4) Miami. On the horizon for Baltimore is a very winnable game, as (2-4) Oakland comes to town.
Browns-(2-4) The team lost punt-fest 2008 14-11 to the up and down (5-2) Redskins. The defense held on as long as they could with no help from the offense. Jamaal Lewis would be one heck of a piece on a team that has other functioning pieces on offense. Who do they blame, Derek Anderson for the paltry stats, or Braylon Edwards for his insufferable dropsies? What about Kellen Winslow running his mouth harder than his routes? What about blow it up, and put Quinn in the game and see what happens. Whatever they do they better hurry its time to go to (3-3) Jacksonville who's coming off a bye.
Bungles-(0-7) Hey at least they have a chance this weekend, they've got the (2-4) Texans (winners of their last 2). Cincy is still looking for their first win as they were embarrassed last week at home by division leader (5-1) Pittsburgh 38-10.

AFC South
Tennessee-(6-0) Even though the competition was nothing to write home about, the undefeated Titans are playing Jeff Fisher football, ball control offense with steady quarterback play by Kerry Collins, and superb running behind Chris Johnson 18 carries 168 yds and one touchdown, and Lendale White 17 carries 149 yds and three touchdowns. The Titans swarming hard hitting defense has been one of the NFL's best all year, and on Sunday they took out the Chiefs top two QB's out of the game. The athletic and tough D is anchored by DT Albert Haynesworth, whom is treating the NFL like his own personal highlight film. The next opponent is division rival (3-3) Indianapolis as they are coming off a humbling loss at Lambeau Field.
Colts-(3-3) Peyton and the Colts could not get on track in Green Bay as they trailed the entire game (Manning's two pick sixes didn't help (pick six=an interception returned for a touchdown). The Colts defense continued to raise questions about their strength and durability, as well as their ability to stop the pass. The once prolific offense looked out of sync as they have several times this year. They wont have any time to diagnose the problems, as an even bigger problem is on the horizon; a division matchup with undefeated (6-0) Tennessee.
Jaguars-(3-3) The Jag's will at least be well rested and prepared for the uninspiring (2-4) Cleveland Browns, after enjoying their bye this past week. Once again this is a very well coached, balanced team with a fierce defense, and two extremely talented running backs.
Houston-(2-4) the Texans won their second consecutive game after an (0-4) start. The offense was lead by QB Matt Schaub, RB Steve Slaton, and WR Andre Johnson, and the defense played very well as a team. They beat Miami by one, and shamed the shameful Detroit Lions by 10 after taking an early three touchdown lead. The Texans may have had a rough start, but they are in the middle of the easiest part of their schedule, with the Bungles up next, look for Houston to win their third in a row, but look for the team to go back to playing just below the competition next week.

AFC West
Denver-(4-3) All ready without their top running back, the Broncos briefly (and maybe longer) lost top QB Jay Cutler to a pinkie injury. Then they lost the game in prime time on Monday night to the (4-2) Pats. The Broncos will have a little time to lick their wounds as they have their bye this week. It seems as if ex-Offensive line coach (and zone running game guru) Alex Gibbs departure to Houston has bothered the Broncos offensive continuity.
Chargers-(3-4) The Bolts had a 1 point lead at the half over the (5-1) Bills, only to go scoreless in the second half. Even though Phillip Rivers numbers did not look bad 22-29 passing over 200 yards, he threw an interception into the end zone with under six minutes to play (on a pass that would have tied the game). LaDanian Tomlinson totaled 14 carries for 41 yards; this team can't win without a lot more from LT. Now the longest road trip in team history, as they travel to London to take on the (3-4) Saints.
Raiders-(2-4) Cable guy, cable guy, that could be called a defensive game, but I think that Oakland’s 16-13 overtime win over the (3-3) New York Bretts was just bad football. But if you are a Raiders fan you take ‘em any way you can get ‘em. Sebastian Janikowski scored the only meaningful points of the game with an NFL overtime record 57 yard field goal to win the game.
Chiefs-(1-5) Brodie Croyle is out for the year, Brock Huard is hurt too, Tyler Thigpen (out of Coastal Carolina) takes the helm, good luck kid! Lost to undefeated (6-0) Titans, last week, and now the embattled Jets are (3-3).

NFC East
Giants-(5-1) The defending champs easily took care of business at home against the (2-5) 49ers, which caused the 49ers to fire their head coach. Brandon Jacobs was his usual mammoth self rushing 17 times for 69 yds and 2 TDs. The defense once again showed their super prowess, by putting the clamps on offensive coordinator Mike Martz make shift offense and QB J.T. O'Sullivan (2 INTs) and Frank Gore who had 11 yds on 11 carries. Next game is the biggest game of the year, so far; the G-men travel to the Steel city, to take on the powerful (5-1) Steelers.
Redskins-(5-2) Barely escape with a win over (2-5) Cleveland in a defensive showcase that was tied 0-0 at the half. Clinton Portis once again showed that he is a premiere back in the NFL. (27 carries 175 yards and 1 touchdown) The Skin's D shut down the Browns passing game that looked so good last week. The next victim on the easiest part of Washington’s schedule is winless Detroit in the dome in Michigan.
Cowboys-(4-3) This is not how Jerry planned it, cause even if Wade Phillips himself would have started at QB the Boy's should have won this one, but you cant win 'em all, and apparently the (2-5) Rams won't loose 'em all! There are 9 regular season games left, and with talent like this, coming through adversity can only make you stronger. Tony Romo's injury is seemingly healing quickly, but it might not be well in time to play (5-2) Tampa Bay in Texas this weekend. The Rams did pick off 40 year old Brad Johnson 3 times, and the Boy's defense did give up 3 TDs and 160 yards, on 25 carries to Stephen Jackson. Will Romo take some shot-gun snaps? Will T.O. do something....... T.O. would do? Will Roy Williams be the matchup nightmare the Cowboys hope?
Eagles-(3-3) The Team used the bye week to heal some key components, and had 2 weeks to prepare for the stunning (4-2) Atlanta Falcons (also coming off a bye). The team is in an early must win game, as they play in hands down the strongest division in the NFL.

NFC North
Packers-(4-3) The Pack gets its second win in a row with a decisive 34-14 win at home over Peyton and the (3-3) Colts. As Mr. Rodgers shines, and shares the spotlight with Ryan Grant, and the young, big, fast, strong, smart Pack defense. The cheese heads in Wisconsin are happy with their new QB, and winning record at the bye (Check back to last comment in December). Green Bay will travel to undefeated Tennessee on Nov. 2.
Bears-(4-3) Not in a million years would anyone have guessed that the Bears would have scored 196pts in 7 games (28pts a game?????????????), LET ALONE, 48 in one game, and that game was against division rival Minnesota's wrecking crew defense. With rookie Matt Forte near the NFL lead in rushing yards, and Kyle Orton continuing to do his spot on Drew Brees impersonation, with 21-32 passing for 283 yds and 2 TDs. Marty Booker took the next step in his long layoff comeback with 3 catches for 79 yards including one for 55 yds and a touchdown, where he ran right through, and past the entire Viking secondary.
Minnesota-(3-4) With this defense, they figure if their offense can score 41 the game is in the bag.....NOT. . . The (4-3) division rival Bears put up 48 pts at Soldier Field. As usual Adrian Peterson had a good game with 22 carries 121 yds and 2 touchdowns, but QB Gus Frerotte was less than admirable as he went 25-40 for 298 yds 2 TDs, with a troublesome 4 INTs. Looks like the Vikings might not get much rest during the bye this week.
Detroit-(0-6) Do you think the Lion’s brass are sending Colt McCoy love letters? Detroit might not have gone through the hardest part of their year, as the schedule will not get any easier, and the team is not getting any better. Gave up the first 21 pts to the Texans, and could not close the gap (kind of like every game this season so far). Next up the (5-2) Redskins invade Ford Field.

NFC South
Panthers-(5-2) The team stepped back into playoff form with a dominating victory over division foe (3-4) New Orleans. The offense executed the game plan perfectly running all over the Saints with the amazing duo of Jonathan Stewart, and Deangelo Williams, and with Jake Delhomme orchestrating the passing game just as they drew it up, Steve Smith caught 6 passes for 122 yds and one score, and Moose Muhammad grabbed some crucial first downs. Julius Peppers is baaack, and playing like a Pro-Bowler, along with Jon Beason the side-line to side-line tackling machine, Chris Henry playing the best safety Carolina has seen since Mike Minter was in his prime, and Ken Lucas is earning his staggering salary with some inspired play (thanx Steve!), Chris Gamble is looking like the disciplined amazing athlete that the Panthers picked out of Ohio State, and Richard Marshall, Ni'al Diggs, Thomas Davis, and Damione Lewis and the rest are playing smart physical D. The leagues #3 defense ought to move up a notch after putting the foot to the leagues #2 offense in Carolina's 30-7 win. The next matchup is with (4-2) Arizona coming off their bye. (Right now the Cards have the highest scoring offense in the League)
Buccaneers-(5-2) Monte Kiffin's defense dismantled the overmatched and undermanned (1-4) Seahawks. Tampa's offense did all they had to do, to beat a team that couldn't score in flag football. This week the Bucs play a professional football team (albeit one with issues) in the (4-3) Dallas Cowboys, don't they have a QB issue too? Could be a big chance in big D!
Falcons-(4-2) Atlanta is flying high after their bye week, the running game is great, the rookie QB looks like Peyton Jr. and the defense is on fire, all for rookie coach Mike Smith. This week there is a battle of the birds (that are both coming off a bye) as the Falcons fly to (3-3) Philly.
Saints-(3-4) Reggie's hurt, the offense is depressed after their 30-7 thrashing at the hands of division rival Carolina, that will surely knock them from their #2 in the NFL rating from before the game. The team left Carolina and went straight to London for this week’s game vs. The (3-4) Chargers. No rest for the perplexed.

NFC West
Cardinals-(4-2) The 1st place Cards led by Pop Warner are flying through the early season, and they soar into Carolina with two weeks of preparation after their bye week to take on the (5-2) Panthers, led by their dominating defense, something has got to give. This could be an explosive game!
Rams-(2-4) Jim Haslett is 2-0 as the head coach of the previously winless St. Louis Rams. After scraping by the (5-2) Skins, the Rams shut down the star-studded (4-3) Cowboys 34-14 (without Tony Romo). Stephen Jackson pounded his way to 25 carries 160 yds and 3 touchdowns, and Marc Bulger played very efficient wile going 14-19 for 173 yds and 1 td. The next test for the suddenly tough Rams, the very tough (4-2) Patriots, in Foxborough.
49ers-(2-5) After a lopsided loss to the defending champs 29-17 (the 5-1 Giants). Where offensive coordinator Mike Martz ran Frank Gore 11 times for 11 yds, head coach Mike Nolan got the ax. The new head coach in Frisco is the legendary Mike Singletary, former all world middle linebacker and 49ers assistant head coach. Best move the Niners have made in years. (Now just get rid of coach Martz, and unless he improves greatly, get rid of J.T. O'Sullivan)! P.S. Give Frank Gore the ball 25-35 times a game and ya'll will be fine.
Seahawks-(1-5) Coach Holmgren shouldn't have to go out like this. Seattle's anemic offense totaled less than 200 yards in their Sunday night loss to the (5-2) Buc’s 20-10. No QB, no WRs, no chance, unless they are heading to San Francisco the week they fired their head coach (they are, this week), but it still wont matter...... unlesss they bring back the single-wing!
